A Message From Greg Roskopf: Is Exercise Really a "Cure-All"?

Exercise has been classified as the cure-all for every disease out there — e.g. coronary heart disease, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, etc.

It has been widely accepted in the medical community that inflammation is the common denominator for every disease, but exercise is also a stress that involves forces being placed on the body. If these forces exceed the tolerance levels of the muscles, inflammatory issues can be compounded.

When the body can’t tolerate the forces placed upon it, negative things happen. The end result is an increase in inflammation, which again, is the primary factor behind disease.

Inflammation, through its normal cycle, has positive effects on the body. The whole reason that we have an inflammatory response is to repair damaged tissue. When muscle tissues are overloaded, the resultant inflammatory signals are sent to the damaged tissue to begin a healing response. This cycle of inflammation requires time.

When we were young, we could typically recover and heal from exercise. In that environment, the muscles actually got stronger and we would achieve the positive health aspects expected from exercise.

The primary goal of resistance training is to overload the muscles to a point where those muscles get damaged, creating a low-grade inflammatory response. Through the normal cycle of inflammation, the muscles will heal and get stronger.

In the right environment, inflammation is not a bad thing — it is when the inflammatory response does not get resolved that problems will arise. Unresolved or chronic inflammation is what causes the health issues that relate to the inflammatory diseases listed earlier.

When muscles get overloaded through daily activity, the end result is an inflammatory response. One of the associated signs of inflammation is muscle weakness, therefore I encourage each of you to continue your health journey in seeing an MAT Practitioner who can help keep your muscular system's integrity optimal for an increased quality of life!

Practitioner Spotlight: Brian Inselman

We have asked Brian Inselman, MAT Practitioner from Nebraska, to join us in the spotlight this month! Get to know Brian and learn from his success utilizing this unique skill set.

How long have you been a practitioner and where do you practice?

"I have been certified with MAT since 2002 (in the second internship class) and have been practicing in Bellevue, Nebraska ever since."

Who is your most memorable MAT client and what was their outcome?

"Every day with MAT is an amazing adventure. Everyone who walks in the door gives me the opportunity to impact their life in a positive manner. I know I can help everyone in some fashion.

One of my most memorable moments may be when working with an NFL running back. Every time I would come and treat him before a game, he would do amazing, but after one treatment, the next day he had 4 touchdowns in the game! It was pretty awesome knowing that I was able to get his body to perform at that level."

What are your goals for this year as a Practitioner of MAT?

"My goals are always to impact the lives of everyone who comes in the door. I see everyone I treat as an athlete in their own field of play and it is my duty to help them perform to their best ability possible.

I love seeing the results someone gets after their first experience. I also want to continue to improve my skills as a practitioner as there is always more to learn and those difficult cases that challenge me to get better."

How do your clients describe MAT?

"They describe it to be like 'voodoo'. They also call me 'dagger fingers' or 'pokie-man' at times but know that it works haha."

What do you want our readers to know?

"MAT is not always easy to describe to someone else but has amazing results. Each person has a different experience but it can leave a positive impact on your life.

I am grateful for the opportunity to have met Greg as early as I have and have been able to learn from his wealth of knowledge to help my practice and to spread that to the many others who I have been able to assist. Greg has always been very gracious in sharing his knowledge and stories to help me grow as an individual and practitioner and I am blessed to have him and his knowledge be part of my life!"

The Month of May at Headquarters

This past month we had students come in for their Exam Prep and Certification Exams (EPCE) in both Mastery Upper Body and Mastery Foot Function. We also had our MATRx Module 2 students in for their practical review and many others who participated in their annual assessments. What a great month it was!

So happy to see these students and connect with them in person! Their positive feedback on being able to participate together at the headquarters excites us to host our future modules and assessments.
